As residents of British Columbia, we’re lucky to live close to some of the most beautiful and rugged wilderness in the world — but a lot of it can only be accessed with a 4×4 vehicle. If you’re ready to take your Jeep, truck, or overlanding vehicle off the beaten path, then we’ve got the perfect trails to add to your bucket list.

Get your vehicle prepared for anything with 4×4 parts and accessories from Trademasters in Chilliwack, then head for the hills to take on:

1. The Iconic Classic: Whipsaw Trail

  • Location: near Princeton, BC
  • Distance: 115 km, loop
  • Difficulty: moderate – difficult

A must-ride trail for anyone who loves off-roading, the Whipsaw Trail is a classic overlanding route in mid-southern British Columbia. It’s the first Canadian trail to make BF Goodrich Tire’s list of Outstanding Trails, and it’s the perfect place to test your off-roading chops in a variety of terrains: it’s got tight technical sections, gnarly hill climbs, deep mud pits, creek crossings, and more. Most of the trail is only moderately difficult, but more experienced 4×4 drivers will be able to challenge themselves with optional obstacles and side trails along the way.

The trail features lots of ponds, old cabins, mines, flowering alpine meadows, and truly spectacular mountain views. At approximately 115 km, it’s the perfect length for a long weekend getaway, and with a reputation as the best 4×4 trail in Western Canada, you won’t want to miss it.

2. Sweeping Alpine Vistas: Molybdenite Ridge

  • Location: near Lillooet, BC
  • Distance: 70 km, point-to-point
  • Difficulty: moderate

For a 4×4 adventure that takes you above the treeline, you can’t get any better than Molybdenite Ridge. This is one of Western Canada’s only shelf roads — as it climbs in elevation, the forest falls away to reveal sweeping, barren, mountainous terrain, and the road is delicately carved into sheer slopes with 360-degree high-alpine views.

The terrain itself is not too technical, but you’ll want to make sure your Jeep, truck, or overlanding vehicle has moderate clearance and can navigate narrow spaces in dense forest. The high alpine road can be narrow and precarious, so keep your wits about you toward the summit and enjoy the sensational views!

3. Room to Explore: Chute Lake

  • Location: near Penticton, BC
  • Distance: variable
  • Difficulty: easy – moderate

If you’re newer to off-roading and want to learn the ropes on some easier trails, or if you simply want to explore more of British Columbia’s gorgeous backcountry, head for the network of trails around Chute Lake! Easily accessible and novice-friendly, there are tons of side trails to navigate 39 square kilometres of lush forests, streams, and mountain lakes.

Get started on Chute Lake Forest Service Road, and choose your own adventure from there!

4. Rocky and Technical: Eagle Ridge

  • Location: near Coquitlam, BC
  • Distance: 16.5 km, point-to-point
  • Difficulty: moderate – difficult

One of the bumpier entries on our list, the trail up to Eagle Ridge is the perfect place to hone your rock-crawling skills. The majority of the trail climbs through the lush forests northeast of Vancouver, making it a great option for city dwellers looking to steal away for a fun day trip.

This trail is not very novice-friendly, so you’ll want to be sure you’re confident tackling rocky and uneven terrain. You’ll also want to make sure your vehicle is ready to handle all the challenges of rocky obstacles, including a solid recovery kit to pull you out of tight spots, a track bar to keep your axle centred, and sway bar disconnects for maximum articulation and flexibility on difficult surfaces. You can find all of these and more off-roading accessories at Trademasters in Chilliwack!

5. Mudding Mecca: Stave Lake

  • Location: near Mission, BC
  • Distance: variable
  • Difficulty: easy – difficult

The Stave Lake mud flats are British Columbia’s premier mudding destination. With wide-open dirt stretches, flowing water crossings, muddy hills, and plenty of log obstacles, there’s no better place to muck up your truck or Jeep.

Warning: Enjoy ripping through the mud all you want, but make sure to stay out of the water of the lake itself — you could get slapped with a hefty fine.
